Course in International Politics and Economics

Overview of the general entrance examination Type A

Entrance examination fee ¥35,000

* Those who took the October examination can also apply for the February examination.
For the second application, the entrance examination fee is ¥30,000.

Selection method Graduate school entrants are selected through a comprehensive examination based on the results of the written test, the interview and the oral test, as well as application documents such as transcripts prepared by the presidents and others of the universities of the applicants.
Examination subjects, etc.
Written test Specialized subjects and English <60 minutes, 100-point scale>

* The test taker must select and answer one question from a total of seven questions, three questions in the area of economics (such as questions about international economics), three in the area of politics (such as questions about international politics), and one in English.

* Test takers may bring an English-Japanese dictionary with them.
They cannot, however, bring an electronic dictionary or an electronic device equipped with a dictionary function.

Interview and oral test

* Conducted in accordance with submitted application documents such as a research project.

* Conducted in accordance with submitted application documents, such as a research project and research output (graduation thesis, etc.).
(To apply for the general entrance examination of type B, the applicant is required to submit his or her research output (graduation thesis, etc.).)

General entrance examination Applicant eligibility

The applicant must have foreign citizenship and fall under one of the following categories:

  1. (1)A person who has graduated from a university in Japan with a residence status of "College student ", or who is expected to graduate from one by March 2019
  2. (2)A person who has received a bachelor's degree pursuant to the provisions of Paragraph 4 of Article 104 of the School Education Act or who is expected to receive one by March 2019
  3. (3)A person who has completed a 16-year course in school education in a foreign country or who is expected to complete one by March 2019
  4. (4)A person who, by completing while in Japan the class subjects in a correspondence course offered by a school in a foreign country, is deemed to have completed a 16-year course of school education in that foreign country or who is expected to complete one by March 2019
  5. (5)A person who, in an educational institute in Japan that is recognized as offering a university course in a foreign country under the school education system of that foreign country and that is separately designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, has completed that course or who is expected to complete it by March 2018 (the person must have completed a 16-year course of school education under the system of that foreign country)
  6. (6)A person who has completed an advanced course of study in a subject designated separately by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology at a specialized training college (limited to a course whose term is at least four years and that meets the other standards established by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) on or after the date designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology or who is expected to complete one by March 2019
  7. (7)A person who is recognized as having appropriate qualifications by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
  8. (8)A person who has entered graduate school pursuant to the provisions of Paragraph 2 of Article 102 of the School Education Act and who is deemed to have scholastic ability suitable for receiving a graduate school education at the Graduate School of Literature
  9. (9)A person who is deemed to have scholastic ability equivalent to or greater than that of university graduates in an individual entrance qualification examination at the Graduate School of Literature and who has reached the age of 22
  10. (10)A person who falls under one of the following categories and who is deemed by the Graduate School of International Politics and Economics to have acquired the predetermined credits with excellent results
    1. [1]A person enrolled in university for at least three years
    2. [2]A person who has completed a 15-year course of school education in a foreign country
    3. [3]A person who, by completing while in Japan the class subjects in a correspondence course offered by a foreign school, is deemed to have completed a 15-year course of school education in that foreign country
    4. [4]A person who, in an educational institute in Japan that is recognized as offering a university course in a foreign country under the school education system of that foreign country and that is separately designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, has completed that course (the person must have completed a 15-year course under the school education system of that foreign country)
Note

Those who wish to make an application under qualifications (8) to (10) must undergo an entrance qualification examination at the Graduate School of International Politics and Economics in advance to be qualified.

Oral test

* Conducted in accordance with submitted application documents such as a research project.

* The master's course of the Graduate School is completed in two years. A course aimed at working adults who have business experience and fundamental knowledge (1-year course) is offered that enables them to receive a bachelor's degree in one year.
For the entrance examination for working adults, the applicant can select between the ordinary course and the 1-year course.

Entrance examination for working adults Applicant eligibility

A person wishing to make an application must fall under one of the following categories:

  1. (1)A person who has graduated from university
  2. (2)A person who has received a bachelor's degree pursuant to the provisions of Paragraph 4 of Article 104 of the School Education Act
  3. (3)A person who has completed a 16-year course of school education in a foreign country
  4. (4)A person who, by completing while in Japan the class subjects in a correspondence course offered by a foreign school, is deemed to have completed a 16-year course of school education in that foreign country
  5. (5)A person who, in an educational institute in Japan that is recognized in the school education system of a foreign country as offering a university course in that foreign country and that is separately designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, has completed that course (the person must have completed a 16-year course under the school education system of that foreign country)
  6. (6)A person who has completed an advanced course of study in a subject designated separately by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology at a specialized training college (limited to a course whose term is at least four years and that meets the other standards established by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) on or after the date designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

  10. (10)A person who is deemed to have scholastic ability equivalent to or greater than that of university graduates in an individual entrance qualification examination at the Graduate School of International Politics and Economics and who has reached the age of 22
Note 1

Those who wish to make an application under qualifications (8) to (10) must undergo an entrance qualification examination at the Graduate School of International Politics and Economics in advance to be qualified.

Note 2

The term working adult refers to a person who meets either of the conditions below as of March 31, 2019:

  1. [1]A person who has graduated from a university stipulated in Article 83 of the School Education Act and then had work experience of at least three years
  2. [2]A person who has completed compulsory education and then had work experience of at least five years (including any period in which he or she worked while in senior high school, university, etc.)

Entrance examination for foreign students Applicant eligibility

The applicant must have foreign citizenship and fall under one of the following categories:

  1. (1)A person who has graduated from a university in Japan with a residence status of "College student", or who is expected to graduate from one by March 2019
  2. (2)A person who has completed a 16-year course of school education in a foreign country or who is expected to complete one by March 2019
  3. (3)A person who is deemed by the Graduate School of International Politics and Economics to have completed a 15-year course of school education in a foreign country and to have acquired the predetermined credits with excellent results
  4. (4)A person who has completed university education in a country where the school education curriculum for completing university education is less than 16 years, who meets requirements a. and b. below, and who is deemed by the Graduate School of International Politics and Economics to have scholastic ability equivalent to or greater than that of university graduates
    • a. A person who, after completing university education, was engaged in research for at least one year as a research student, researcher, etc. at a university in or outside of Japan, an inter-state-university research institute, or a comparable research institute
      (This includes a person who is engaged in research for at least one year by the last day of March 2019.)
    • b. A person who will have reached the age of 22 by the last day of March 2019
  5. (5) A person who is deemed to have scholastic ability equivalent to or greater than that of university graduates in an individual entrance qualification examination at the Graduate School of International Politics and Economics and who has reached the age of 22
Note

Those who wish to make an application under qualifications (3), (4), or (5) must undergo an entrance qualification examination at the Graduate School of International Politics and Economics in advance to be qualified.

Individual entrance qualification examination

Those who need to undergo an individual entrance qualification examination before making an application must undergo the entrance qualification examination in accordance with the procedure below.

Application period

  • Those wishing to take the October examinationThe application must arrive on and after Monday, September 3, 2018 and NOT LATER THAN Monday, September 10.
  • Those wishing to take the February examinationThe application must arrive on and after Monday, December 17, 2018 and NOT LATER THAN Thursday, December 25.

Application procedure

  1. (1)Entrance examination qualification confirmation application (Graduate School-designated form)
  2. (2)Resume and performance certificate (in free format)
  3. (3)Proof of graduation from the applicant's highest level of schooling
  4. (4)Transcript from the applicant's highest level of schooling
  5. (5)A person with foreign citizenship who lives in Japan must submit a copy of their residence certificate or residence card (both sides).

Notification of examination results

Examination results will be sent within two weeks after the examination form arrives at the Graduate School.
(To those who are granted the entrance qualification, an "entrance examination qualification certificate" will be sent together with the notification.)
If granted the qualification, the applicant must attach the "entrance examination qualification certificate" when making an application.
