History

1877 MISHIMA Chushu founds Nishogakusha, Chinese Classics Studies Academy
1919 SHIBUSAWA Eiichi becomes chancellor
1928 Nishogakusha Academy is established
1932 KANEKO Kentaro becomes chancellor
1945 School building is entirely burned down in the Great Tokyo Air Raids
1948 Nishogakusha High School is established
1949 Nishogakusha Academy gains university status under the new educational system
Departments of Japanese Literature and Chinese Literature are established in the Faculty of Literature
1963 YOSHIDA Shigeru (former prime minister) becomes chancellor
1966 Graduate School of Literature is established, offering Doctoral and Master’s Programs for Sinology and Master’s Program for Japanese Literature
1969 Nishogakusha Shonan High School (now Nishogakusha Kashiwa Junior and Senior High School) is established NACHI Saden becomes chancellor
1977 100th anniversary
1982 Kashiwa Campus is opened
1986 Doctoral Program for Japanese Literature is opened in Graduate School of Literature
URANO Masahiko becomes chancellor
1991 Department of International Politics and Economics is established in the Faculty of International Politics and Economics
1995 Both full-time and night schools are introduced to the Graduate School of Literature
1997 Nishogakusha becomes affiliated with the Japan University Accreditation Association (JUAA) as a full member
2001 Graduate School of International Politics and Economics is established to offer Master’s Program for Course in International Politics and Economics
2004 Construction of the first and second buildings of Kudan Campus is completed Institute for East Asian Studies, which is adopted as 21st century COE program (development of international hub for studies of Chinese literature in Japan), is established
2009 Construction of the third building of Kudan Campus is completed
2011 Nishogakusha Kashiwa Junior High School is established
MITO Hidenori becomes Chairman of the Board of Trustees
2012 135th anniversary
The long-term vision "N'2020 Plan" is announced
