About our 140th Celebration

Our school was established on the October 10, 1877 (the 10th day of the 10th month of Meiji 10), in the Kudan district of Tokyo.

The school was founded with two core missions: to "develop character through study of the Asian mind and heart", and to "strengthen the ability to think and act independently, while educating students to contribute to society".

Sinology scholar and jurist Chūshū Mishima, dismayed by what he perceived as the privileging of western culture under the Meiji government, established Nishogakusha with the aim of reasserting Asian culture and ideology as the source for educating students to meet the challenges of a changing world.

On Oct 10 2017, we celebrate the 140th anniversary of school, and of the founding principles it continues to carry forward.

Today's society is changing: increasingly globalized, information-driven, and knowledge-based.
Moving forward, we can expect these change and complexities to intensify. What capabilities should we strive to inculcate in our students, then, to best prepare them to serve their society's emerging challenges?
We believe that graduates should acquire the ability to act independently, with drive and self-control; that they should assimilate the wisdom and experience of the classics as a basis for understanding and engaging the challenges of the future; and that they should emerge from their educations as true internationalists with a strong grounding in their own culture's language and ideals.

As we have done through the past, so shall we do in the future: educate our students to help carry our nation successfully into the future, and to contribute to the betterment of our emerging society.
