History

1877 Nishogakusha, Chinese Classics Studies Academy was established by Chushu Mishima.
1919 Eiich Shibusawa became the 3rd Chancellor.
1928 Nishogakusha Academy was established.
1932 Kentaro Kaneko became the 4th Chancellor.
1945 All the buildings of Nishogakusha were destroyed by the Great Tokyo Air Raids of WWII.
1948 Nishogakusha High School was established.
1949 Nishogakusha Academy gained a university status under a new educational system and became as Nishogakusha University. Departments of Japanese Literature and Chinese Literature were created in the Faculty of Literature
1963 Shigeru Yoshida (a former Prime Minister) became the 5th Chancellor.
1966 The Graduate School of Literature was established, offering the Doctoral and Masters Programs for Sinology and the Master’s Program for Japanese Literature.
1968 The Institute of Oriental Studies was opened.
1969 Nisogakusha Shonan High School was established.
Saden Nachi became the 6th Chancellor.
1977 100th anniversary of establishment
1978 The Institute of Wang Yangming Doctrines was opened.
1982 Shonan Campus of Nishogakusha University was opened.
1986 The Doctoral Program for Japanese Literature was offered in the Graduate School of Literature.
Masahiko Urano became the 7th Chancellor.
1987 110th anniversary of establishment
1991 The Department of International Political Science and Economics was established in the Faculty of International Political Science and Economics.
1995 Both full-time and night schools were introduced in the Graduate School of Literature.
1997 120th anniversary of establishment
Nishogakusha University participated in the Japan University Accreditation Association (JUAA) as a full member.
2001 The Graduate School of International Politics and Economics was established to offer the Master’s Program for International Politics and Economics.
Yasuyuki Yamada became the Chairman of the board of trustees.
Tadahisa Ishikawa became the President of Nishogakusha University.
2002 125th anniversary of establishment
2004 Construction of the first and second buildings of Kudan Campus was completed.
The Institute for East Asian Studies was opened.
2005 Tamotsu Sato became the Chairman of the board of trustees.
Kanichi Imanishi became the President of Nishogakusha University.
2006 Nishogakusha, School Juridical Person received rating of “A-” from Rating and Investment Information, Inc. (R&I).
2007 Noritaka Oyama became the Chairman of the board of trustees.
130th anniversary of establishment
2009 Kazunori Watanabe became the President of Nishogakusha University.
Construction of the third building on Kudan Campus was completed.
2011 Hidenori Mito became the Chairman of the board of trustees.
2012 135th anniversary of establishment
2014 Construction of the fourth building on Kudan Campus was completed.
2015 Jyunko Sugahara became the President of Nishogakusha University.
2017 The Department of Urban Culture Design was established in the Faculty of Literature.
Acquisition of school ground and building for the fifth building on Kudan Campus.
140th anniversary of establishment
2018 The Department of International Business was established in the Faculty of International Political Science and Economics.
2019 Shigehiro Eto became the President of Nishogakusha University.
